I have a deep affection for Ocracoke and the people who call it home. It is the only place that my husband of nearly 32 years and I go when we vacation. I work in a hospital laboratory and have been dealing with all of this Covid 19 testing. I have worked as many as 5 twelve hour shifts because of this virus. I would love to be the one to lock this thing in a chest and throw away the key. I feel like this is an appropriate representation of Ocracoke , the will of the people and the reason the Ocrafolk Festival had to be cancelled. "You can't stop the music."

I am a dancer with the Green Grass Cloggers. I enjoy designing graphic art and writing songs. I have wonderful memories of performing and spending time with my friends and family on Ocracoke Island. Getting to see all the familiar faces of Ocrafolk. My design uses the sea as a face mask but shows how the music of Ocrafolk still connects us. With the eyes in the sky, the music being carried across the sea, stories being told by the lighthouse and dancing going on around the live oak tree. Ocrafolk 2020: The Melody of the Sea is Calling Me.

I am a local artist graduating from Ocracoke School this year. I am heading off to Ringling College of Art & Design this coming fall. I wanted to do this piece because I wanted to produce a piece of work that represents Ocracoke. I wanted it to represent what Ocracoke is and how deeply the community is connected that I saw. I worked in the key elements that I feel is the core of Ocracoke. Music, Community, Fun, Celebrations and of course Ocracats.

Artist(s) #6: Finley Austin, Volunteers, Ocracoke Senior Class of 2020
Artist Comments from Finley Austin:
This was a collaborative effort. The vision was to combine the themes of Ocracoke Strong, Ocracoke Alive, the festival that celebrates stories told in tales, verse and song, the resiliency of the people and the island, the loss of the festival and so many other things this year that people have had to adapt to and do without, and the hope for a return to group celebrations next year. The students exemplify that the most in my opinion - they lost their school to Dorian, then the lost their sports activities and a lot of hands on learning and social rights of passage due to covid. Through it all they continued writing their stories. The graduating class seemed the best symbol of human perseverance and seeking to create the future. The live oak at Springer's that was pushed over several feet by the surge but survived the storm is a symbol of the island's strength and changes that will forever be with us both physical and community. Community volunteers graciously took photographs and the seniors (two couldn't be here) volunteered to pose. So these entries are from all of us.

I am a middle school teacher in Pitt Co, and have recently discovered my love of watercolor! For this piece, the island of Ocracoke serves as the neck of the banjo. Beloved landmarks on the island are scattered throughout. Route 12 serves as 2 of the strings on the instrument. In addition, pun inspired band names make the set list complete!

Artist #9: Katherine Hui (Submitted in time . . . but we didn't see it when we started the voting)
Artist Comments: I'm a 19-year old college student and artist from New York. I found the poster contest online, so I took a look at the Ocrafolk Festival website, and absolutely admired all the community and cultural activities going on at Ocracroke Island! I wanted to submit a design for the contest because of the folk theme, and this would be my first time digitally illustrating something for a music and arts festival. The artwork I submitted centers some important symbols from the festival, such as the squid and the lighthouse, with a playful color palette to express the rich cultural, artistic, educational, and environmental activities at the festival. I hope you all like it since I had a lot of fun drawing it!
