About the Arts Partnership Program
 The Arts Partnership programs brings visiting artists to the students of Ocracoke Island.  You can help us in three ways.

1. Give a donation to help fund the program (estimated cost is $8000 per semester)
2. Own a rental home on Ocracoke? Consider donating a week's stay in the off season to house a visiting artist.
3. Are you an artist that would like to come to Ocracoke and share your skills? Please consider participating in the program

“We believe that in our quickly changing society, creativity and out-of–the box thinking are some of the most critical survival tools a youngster can possess. A  fully-balanced, creative individual can bring a fresh perspective to whatever field and path they may choose in life.” says Ocracoke Alive president, David Tweedie.

Ocracoke Alive will be contracting creating the Arts Partnership Program for this fall over the next couple of months.  Estimated cost of the program is $8000 for one semester.

“The principal of Ocracoke School, Walt Padgett, and the Hyde County Superintendent, Dr. Latimore have been very supportive of this new collaboration” says David.  “We appreciate their recognition of the importance of the arts in our community. At the same time, Ocracoke Alive wishes to make it clear that they see that it is the responsibility of the state of North Carolina to provide this valuable curriculum as part of a standard education for all levels of North Carolina’s students.”

Ocracoke Alive is welcoming financial contributions towards costs of the program.  “It is a wonderful way for supporters of the Ocracoke community to give the gift of the arts to the young people of our island,” says David. This can be easily done by mailing a tax-deductible contribution to "Ocracoke Alive, PO Box 604, Ocracoke, NC 27960" or with a credit card through the Support Us tab above.

Ocracoke Alive Arts Partnership Teacher Application 2014-15
As many of you know, Ocracoke Alive is working on a partnership with Ocracoke School to help bring arts programming back to the grades K-8 for the fall semester of 2015.  If you are interested in applying to teach one of these sessions, this sheet will give you more information.  We may have more applicants that we have space, but we look forward to continuing this program into the future.  If we know you are interested in teaching we can contact you then as well.

Ocracoke Alive’s mission is to provide student arts programming and to also show support of local artist/teachers by providing a per diem for their work.  We will, of course, welcome any contributions of labor or funds to the program . . . so if you know of interested supporters on and off the island feel free to spread the word.

What?
Ocracoke Alive’s Community Arts/Creative Partnership works to provide supplemental arts/creative education for students of Ocracoke School.  We believe that in our quickly changing society, creativity and out-of–the box thinking are some of the most critical survival tools a youngster can possess. Through the Community Arts Partnership, Ocracoke Alive works to recognize the importance of the fully balanced, creative individual and the fresh perspective that such a person can bring to whatever field and path they may choose in life.
 
When?
Currently, we are seeking artists & creative individuals for residency work with Ocracoke School students, all ages preK-12th grade, beginning in the fall of 2015.  At the moment we are seeking two guest instructors per week.
  • Week 1 ~ Jan 27 & 29
  • Week 2 ~ Feb 3 & 5
  • Week 3 ~ Feb 10 & 12
Types of programming, class sizes
Currently, the program is designed to expose students to a concept or art medium during a single 45 minute period during the week.  In the future there may be more time available, but for the now, instructors should plan for only a single exposure for each class, once during the Tuesday/Thursday session.  There may be an extra period during which students may return for on additional session on Thursday at 2:15.  The instructor’s age group category will either be Pre-K through 3rd grade, or 4th through 8th. Class sizes generally run between 10 and 17 students. In

10:25 ~ 6th Grade

11:55 ~ 3rd Grade

1:30 ~ 4th Grade

10:25 ~ 8th Grade (7th grade 2nd semester)
11:10 ~ Lunch
11:55 ~Any Students from 6-8 grade who want another session
12:45 ~ 1st Grade
1:30 ~ 5th Grade
2:15 ~ Kindergarten

Compensation
The Community Arts Partnership program is just beginning and is working at growing its financial resources.  Currently we are able to offer the following compensation to two categories of artists.
 
Artist residents of Ocracoke Island ~ These artists will receive financial compensation of $150 per week for five total sessions, (Tuesday & Thursday).
 
Visiting Artists (The Island Retreat Package) ~ These artists will be compensated with housing for them and up to three guests for a week on Ocracoke (valued at $800), Sunday-Saturday.  We encourage visitors to use this time as a period of reflection, personal artistic development, communing with friends and family, and enjoying the quiet reflective setting of a remote winter island off the coast of North Carolina.
 
Materials
Some materials may be provided by Ocracoke Alive based on the mediums that students are working with.  Please plan to be economical.
 
Work Spaces Available
Ocracoke Alive and Ocracoke School have several workshop spaces available for the program, including . . . Ocracoke School Multipurpose Room, Ocracoke School Art Classroom, Deepwater Theater, Skipjack Wilma Lee (Docked at Ocracoke Harbor)
 
Instructor Requirements
Instructors must submit to a background check by Hyde County Schools prior to approval for working with students.
