Celebrate Día de los Muertos on Ocracoke
Sunday, November 9, 2025 • 4–7 PM • Ocracoke Community Center (Add to the Altar beginning at 2 PM) Ocracoke’s Mexican community invites everyone to join in a special celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) — a cherished tradition honoring loved ones and ancestors who have passed, including pets. An ofrenda (altar) will be created in the Community Center, adorned with flowers, candles, photographs, and meaningful objects. Community members are warmly invited to bring:
At 4:30 PM, Alfonso Pioquinto Escobar will give a short talk about the history and meaning of the tradition, followed by time to reflect, ask questions, and socialize. About the Tradition Día de los Muertos has deep roots in Aztec and Mayan beliefs about the afterlife and the return of the spirits on certain days each year. Over time, these practices merged with the Catholic observances of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, November 1 honors children who have passed (“Day of the Innocents”) and November 2 honors deceased adults (“Day of the Dead”). The Ocracoke celebration is scheduled for November 9 due to other island events the previous weekend. The ofrenda is decorated with symbolic elements such as:

Ocracoke Community Multicultural Celebration to be Held on November 1, 2024
Ocracoke, NC — The Ocracoke Community Multicultural Celebration, a new event celebrating the rich cultural diversity of Ocracoke Island, will take place on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 1-3 PM at Ocracoke School. The festival is open to the public and aims to bring together students, families, residents, and visitors to honor and celebrate cultural heritage through music, dance, food, and interactive activities. This year’s theme focuses on the shared histories and traditions of the many cultures that have influenced Ocracoke, highlighting both the diversity within the community and the universal experiences that bind us together. The event is free to the public. The event is produced through a partnership between Ocracoke School and the non-profit Ocracoke Alive. Additional support provided by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. |

Festival Latino de Ocracoke Returns November 3-4, 2023. 6th Annual Ocracoke Island Event features Latino Music, Dance, Food, Games, & Community on Ocracoke Island, NC.

Produced by the island non-profit, Ocracoke Alive, in partnership with Ocracoke’s vibrant Latino community, the festival will feature music, ballet folklorico dances, incredible food, games, and more. The festival kicks off on Friday, November 3rd, with day performances & workshops for Ocracoke School students with the virtuostic Venezuelan harpist, Larry Bellorin. Friday night the Larry Bellorin band will give a special concert at 7 PM at Ocracoke Alive's Deepwater Theater. Tickets are $10 Adults, $5 Kids, and are available only at the door. Saturday, November 4th, from 3-5 PM (admission free for this part of the festival), the celebration moves to the Berkley Barn at Ocracoke’s Berkley Manor with food, games, and performances by Larry Bellorin & friends, Trio Chavales de Hidalgo, and more. The festivities move inside the Berkley Barn for an evening concert ($10 Adults, Kids Free) from 6-8, including performances by Ocracoke's own Ballet Folklorico de Ocracoke. The evening rounds out with a community dance at the Berkley Barn from 8-10 PM with Trio Chavales de Hidalgo. Proceeds from the Festival Latino de Ocracoke will benefit programming in the island community. The Festival Latino is supported by Ocracoke Alive with assistance from the Ocracoke Township TDA (visitocracokenc.com), the Pony Island Inn, Sorellas, Pirates Chest, Ocracoke Surf Fishing Tournament and additional sponsors.
